As the open southern border continues to allow members of the violent Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua into the US, law enforcement in Tennessee warns of increasing activity in all major cities. How can you stay aware of your surroundings and identify Tren de Aragua members before they become a danger?
Tattoos & Brands
Like most criminal organizations, Tren de Aragua members signify their allegiance to the organization with various tattoo designs. Some of the most common images are trains, clocks, single or crossed AK-47s, and crowns. Female members are considered property of the gang and may be branded behind the ears with symbols or numbers related to Tren de Aragua.

Clothing
Tren de Aragua members are known to wear Chicago Bulls clothing despite no direct affiliation to the area or team. This connection arises from one of the Caracas, Venezuela strongholds of the gang-a neighborhood called 23 de Enero (translation January 23rd). This also accounts for the use of “jump man” tattoos resembling the Michael Jordan sillouette, as well as Jordan 23 jerseys worn by gang members.
Venezuela-Specific Colors & Flag
The Venezuela flag consists of yellow, blue and red colors that may be represented in clothing or tattoos by gang members. Also the number 58 (the country code for Venezuela) may be used by members in various ways. The eight 5-pointed stars on the Venezuelan flag may be used by members in tattoos as well.
Combine Indicators
Obviously, anyone could have a train or crown tattoo and not be a member of a violent Venezuelan gang. It is important to look for a combination of indicators such as common clothing, known tattoo designs, and suspicious or predatory behavior to draw conclusions on individuals as to whether they should be avoided for safety. It is never advised to discriminate against anyone based on one factor; however, having awareness of the possible indicators could be the difference between you and your family’s safety and a dangerous encounter.

Nashville, Knoxville, and Memphis as well as several other major metropolitan areas in Tennessee have seen enormous growth in activity by Tren de Aragua. Tattoos such as clocks, trains, and crowns in combination with suspicious behavior and common clothing such as Chicago Bulls team jerseys or hats can indicate possible allegiance with this vile gang. Stay alert when in areas known to have increased influence by Tren de Aragua and alert authorities at the first sign of threat to yourself or those close to you. Vigilance could save your life.
